- This position requires development and review of curriculum, as well as assessment of student learning.
- This non-instructional assignment requires counseling hours at Gilroy and Hollister campuses, during daytime, and may include occasional evening, Saturday and/or an on-line format.
- The schedule is based on departmental needs on a term-by-term basis.
- This position is represented by the Gavilan College Faculty Association.
Under the direction and supervision of the Dean of Student Support, the CalWORKs/Fresh Success Counselor will provide a wide range of counseling, coordination and support services to CalWORKs and Fresh Success students. This position will provide specialized support using a trauma-informed, case-management approach to supporting low income, parenting, and first-generation students. Perform core counseling functions: academic, career, and personal counseling as well as crisis intervention and outreach.

Essential Duties
The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title:
- Provide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career and personal counseling on a drop-in and appointment basis, using various modalities (in-person, virtual and phone).
- Assist students to understand educational options, engage in educational and career planning, develop Student Educational Plans (SEPs) and help with course selection.
- Evaluate student progress toward established goals; provide intervention and follow-up services to students on probation and dismissal status.
- Coordinate program activities and student services to support student success, including facilitation of career, transfer, leadership and student success workshops.
- Conduct outreach and assist students with matriculating into the college.
- Provide case management by building rapport with students, regularly reviewing and monitoring student academic progress to support attainment of educational goal.
- Maintain relevant and timely communication with students on caseload throughout their enrollment; and utilize appropriate case management tools and technology to monitor student progress and success.
- Provide referrals to basic needs such as food, housing, mental health, transportation or other community resources when needed.
- Collaborate and coordinate student support efforts with enrollment services, financial aid and other student support programs.
- Liaise with County caseworkers to coordinate student eligibility and compliance.
- Facilitate student case management meetings with partner agencies.
- Serve as an advocate for students in resolving academic or personal challenges.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support for students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer.
- Contribute to department and campus-wide student success initiatives.
- Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, participate in ongoing professional learning activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of faculty.
- This position may teach counseling, career, and orientation courses related to the assignment as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Ability to:
- Exercise sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Provide culturally relevant counseling and student services to students from ethnically diverse backgrounds, including first generation and low-income students.
- Communicate effectively maintain collaborative working relationships with students, staff, and managers.
- Collaborate effectively with other departments to facilitate student support services.
- Apply an equity-minded framework and ensure programs, services and processes are designed and delivered to meet the varying needs of all constituents.
Experience/Knowledge of:
- Trauma-informed counseling practices.
- Developing and conducting academic and personal development opportunities and activities specific to the needs of first generation, low-income students.
- Principles of student engagement, development, and success.
- CalWORKs and CalFresh program guidelines.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling from an accredited college or university OR the equivalent
AND
1) Have completed a minimum of nine semester units of college course work predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.
OR
2) Have completed six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work courses in a community college EOPS program, or in a program dealing predominantly with ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social, or economic disadvantages.
AND
Two (2) years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or academic disadvantages.
