Job Summary
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for a Tenure-Track position at the Assistant Professor level, to begin August 2025 or up to a year later at the candidate's request. We seek a candidate with expertise in bioethics, broadly understood to include issues in moral, social, political, and legal philosophy that relate to the practice, policy, science, and/or technology of medicine, biology, and the life sciences more generally. We have a particular interest in candidates with expertise in the issues relating to women, gender-nonconforming individuals, the LGBTQIA community, and other marginalized populations. The candidate must be both willing and able to teach an introductory-level undergraduate course in medical ethics and a more advanced undergraduate course in bioethics, as well as graduate courses related to these areas.

Who We Are
The Philosophy Department at CU Boulder has large and thriving BA, MA, and PhD programs, with one of the largest undergraduate Philosophy majors in the US (more than 200 majors, and 300-400 minors). It has 24 permanent faculty members (19 tenure-track, 5 teaching-track), and numerous lecturers. It is highly ranked in the latest edition of the Philosophical Gourmet Report, both overall (27th nationally), and in numerous specialty areas (tied for 1st in Applied Ethics, and Medieval Philosophy; tied for 10th in 17th Century Philosophy; tied for 11th in Epistemology, and Metaethics; tied for 12th in Normative Ethics, Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science; tied for 15th in Moral Psychology, and Decision Theory, Rational Choice, and Game Theory; tied for 16th in Political Philosophy; tied for 19th in Metaphysics). It hosts the annual Rocky Mountain Ethics Congress (RoME), which is one of the largest (if not the largest) annual international ethics conferences in the world, and the annual conference on the History and Philosophy of Science (CHPS), as well as an annual graduate student philosophy conference, The Rocky Mountain Philosophy Conference (RMPC).
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Teaching load: 2-2. Teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Regular dissertation and undergraduate advising responsibilities as well as regular service duties. Annual merit evaluations based 40 percent on teaching, 40 percent on research and 20 percent on service.
What We Can Offer
- The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $90,000 annually.
- May be eligible for moving expenses, plus funding for research and travel. The position comes with an option for a semester free of teaching pre-tenure, subject to University Policy.

PhD in Philosophy at the time of appointment is required. ABD candidates will be considered but must offer evidence that they can meet the PhD requirement by the start date.
