About VP Business Affairs
The Division of Business Affairs oversees many elements of doing business at UTEP, including human resources, the budget office, and accounting and financial services. In addition, the VPBA Office manages business contracts and agreements, institutional memberships, the University's risk management/insurance program, and the open records process. Our goal is to support the University's teaching, research and public service mission by providing superior services to the campus community.
Environmental Health and Safety
The Environment Health & Safety Office was established to develop, promote and maintain a safe, healthy learning and working environment for the students, faculty, staff and visitors at the University of Texas at El Paso.
This is accomplished by identifying and evaluating health and safety risks on campus and recommending methods that will eliminate or abate those risks, assuring University compliance with applicable laws and regulations while also demonstrating UTEP's commitment to its stewardship responsibilities to the surrounding environment and population of the International border region it serves.
The energies of the Environmental Health and Safety staff are therefore focused on health and safety issues facing UTEP and meeting the compliance responsibilities of the campus.
Position Information
Hiring Department: Environmental Health and Safety
Posting End Date: Open until filled.
Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends.
FLSA status: Exempt
Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Purpose of Position
Summary: This position is part of the Fire and Life Safety Department and collaborates with campus partners to ensure campus compliance with the NFPA Life Safety Code, NFPA Fire Code, International Building and Fire Codes, and applicable state, local, and federal regulations. This involves developing and implementing programs, procedures, and training that contribute to the organization's success.
Note: The primary accountabilities below are intended to describe the general content of and requirements of this position and are not intended to be an exhaustive statement of duties. Incumbents may perform all or some of the primary accountabilities listed below. This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and must be insurable as defined in the UT System UTS 157, as applicable to the performance of essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform skilled fire prevention, risk reduction, and fire inspection duties. Ensure adequate permitting and inspections of all processes. Work with the Fire & Life Safety Department personnel to plan, organize, and conduct fire & life safety public education. Work with other stakeholders of the UTEP community to incorporate them into public education. Assist in investigations of all fire incidents on university property, write investigative reports as to the origin & cause of fire incidents, and coordinate all fire incident investigations with UTEP Police, UT System Risk Management, and the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office.
Review construction/renovation plans and fire protection system plans for proper adherence to fire and life safety codes and NFPA standards. Assist in coordination, and tracking individual plan review/approvals to a timely and code-compliant conclusion. Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, various agencies, and community stakeholders to advise on fire prevention issues affecting development and construction activities; provide technical expertise concerning fire protection infrastructure planning and design and placement of fire and life safety equipment.
Must have good organizational and time management skills with the ability to set priorities to coordinate assignments with fluctuation and time-sensitive deadlines; proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
Responds to emergencies, determine hazards, and recommend corrective action.
Must be available for "On-Call" duty.
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and ability to learn and use institutional software systems.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties may be assigned.
The ideal candidate will be organized, team-oriented, and exhibit high self-motivation and interpersonal skills, including establishing and maintaining relationships with fellow employees, state/local/county officials, contractors, and the public. Strong applicants can solve problems and resolve conflicts with minimal supervision. They will have a working knowledge of policies and regulations (local, state, and federal) surrounding building code regulations.
The ideal candidate will have a background in fire protection systems. The successful candidate will also excel in communication, continuous learning, customer-focused service, dependability, flexibility, interpersonal skills, leadership, planning and organization, reasoning and problem-solving, and teamwork. Possesses Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Fire Inspector, Plans Examiner, Fire and Life Safety Educator, or Fire Investigator. Incident Management Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400, ICS-700, ICS-800.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Responsibilities are carried out according to the organization's objectives, policies, and applicable laws.
Qualifications
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Education required: Associate degree in Fire Science, Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field. Experience in lieu of education: five years of fire prevention experience.
Minimum Experience required: Three years of experience related to the statement of duties and responsibilities or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification as a Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), TCFP Fire Inspector or equivalent is preferred.
Strong knowledge of NFPA codes, OSHA standards, and local fire regulations.
Experience conducting fire safety inspections and implementing fire safety programs.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for training and collaboration.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with fire safety management software.
