Posting Context Statement:

Position Overview:
The position is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing the steam and condensate piping systems, from the pressure reducing station to the points of use inside university buildings. It will assist plumbing personnel and other skilled trades shops with projects, repairs and emergencies as needed.

Duties may include:
  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain equipment
  • Repair or replace steam pipeline and condensate lines to meet American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code
  • Repair or replace control valves, pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, check valves, vacuum relief valves, pipes, pumps and mechanical seals
  • Assist with planning for and scheduling work that requires steam system shutdowns
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Experience:
  • Performing steam pipefitting, plumbing, pump maintenance and air compressor maintenance
  • Using a wide variety of mechanical equipment, handheld and power tools
  • Troubleshooting mechanical problems
  • Reading line drawings, blueprints, cut sheets and schematics
  • Working with steam-related systems, valves, pumps and motors

Required Education:
  • Two years vocational or technical training in steam fitting and/or plumbing; two years of work experience related to steam fitting and/or plumbing may substitute for vocational training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Other:
  • Possess a valid drivers license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles
  • Trained in Lockout/Tagout, confined spaces and First Aid/CPR certified within one year of hire
  • Ability to respond to emergency calls within one hour and serve on weekend call-out duty on a regular rotation

Additional Preferred:
  • First- or Second-Class Boiler Operators license
  • Journeyman Plumber License
  • Welding certification

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Must be able to:
  • Bend, stoop and work in awkward positions for several hours at a time
  • Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding and scissor lifts
  • Carry, lift or otherwise move items weighing up to 70 pounds
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing duties
  • Work in confined spaces using equipment and appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Work in inclement weather conditions
  • Process both sound and visual safety alarms
