Primary Purpose of Position:
This position is part of a multi-disciplinary health and safety team which prides itself on serving as qualified subject matter experts and providing excellent customer service. The primary purpose of this position is to administer the university's biological safety program: manage biohazardous waste disposal program in keeping with State of North Carolina and Federal statutes and regulations; serve as the biological safety representative on various university committees including Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); conduct annual or more frequent biological laboratory or site inspections; review laboratory safety plans; provide biological risk assessment services for campus partners regarding potential biohazards; respond to biological or infectious materials related incidents or accidents and provide, document and implement corrective actions; provide training for the university community regarding biological safety issues and create/manage accurate and engaging training opportunities that meet all Federal, state or local requirements; ensures training records are accurately maintained using document management system; participate in strategic planning, advising, negotiating and analyzing; and review and approve standard operating procedures for use of biohazards in laboratories. Oversee hazardous materials removal and collaborate with lab vendors as necessary to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Occupational Safety, Industrial Technology or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The successful candidate must possess a working knowledge of EHS program management with an emphasis on biological safety to assess, interpret and coordinate the University's administration and application of relevant policies, regulations and laws promulgated from oversight agencies (e.g., OSHA, EPA, NIH, etc.) requirements; knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, industry standards, trends, and best practices; knowledge of the principles of industrial hygiene including recognition, evaluation and control of recognized hazards to assess hazardous biological or infection agent situations; knowledge of risk assessment and management; incident investigation and loss prevention; knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) applications; knowledge of database management, and graphics software; ability to communicate effectively with an educationally and culturally diverse community of individuals and groups in a variety of settings to explain and convey program and technical information in accordance with the audience's capability to understand; ability to provide technically accurate and succinct briefings in oral, written, or presentation formats; ability to understanding both theoretical and practical aspects of analytical, technical and professional as applied to environmental health and safety situations that may occur in a University setting; ability to comprehend and make inferences from a broad range of technical material; ability to conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, and hazardous biological or infectious materials to make recommendations for remediation and/or change management to ensure compliance with safety standards; ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
