Job Summary

Housing Facilities Services (HFS) at the University of Colorado, Boulder is now encouraging applications for a Building Mechanic! This role is a multiple trades focused position designed to keep all aspects of HFS and Dining Facilities buildings in working order. This involves the maintenance, repair and alteration of a variety of building and mechanical systems on-campus as well as providing on-call assistance to all areas of HFS on rotation with other members of HFS staff. Housing Facilities Services (HFS) is a comprehensive facility management operation that provides around-the-clock support to over 10,000 residents and 20,000 conference guests annually. Services include maintenance, repair, renovation, project management, capital construction, housekeeping and grounds-keeping operations. HFS has approximately 190 full-time employees and approximately 80 part-time and student staff, who all strive to give residents the best living experience possible.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Building Maintenance Repairs
  • Perform maintenance and repairs in Residents Halls, Campus Dining buildings, Administration building, and public areas to enhance resident's security, comfort, and safety
  • Maintain/replace items such as: garbage disposals, drain wastes and p-traps; unplug tubs, toilets, sinks, garbage disposals, floor drains and main lines, using both hand and power auger.
  • Repair or replace faucets, shower valves, shower heads, water stops, ball valves, gate valves, toilet tanks, ballcocks, wax ring and handle kits, supply tubes, and flappers.
  • Repair damaged drywall or plaster and prepare surface for paint
  • Use hand tools like (brushes, rollers, spackle, knives, sandpaper) and power tools to apply primer, paint, and stains to cover repaired holes, cracks or graffiti and proper furniture and floor worksite protection, glass, replacing or adjusting window balancers and stops, repairing or replacing window and door screens, repairing, or installing storm doors.
  • Ensure that all exterior and interior doors function properly by milling doors and jams for door hardware installation, including: adjusting door closers, panic bar hardware, locking devices, latches, hinges, doorstops, and knob sets, as
  • Replace domestic hot water circulating pumps and motors, heating and cooling circulating water pumps and motors.
Preventive Maintenance
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and checks in resident's halls and campus dining halls by changing filters and greasing bearings on seals and motors for all types of HVAC equipment including AHU, EAU, FCU, and EF.
  • Analyze and determine malfunction of heating and air conditioning system and make repairs to control valves, switches, blower motors, and thermostats.
  • Report all failed items using TMA work order system.
Asbestos Contamination Management
  • Remove asbestos contamination by collecting samples for analysis by others, removes asbestos material by removing (if applicable and containing asbestos) vinyl asbestos floor tile, tile glue window putty, ceiling tile, and wall plaster.
  • Dispose of asbestos material safely according to rules and laws.
Thermal Treatment Support
  • Move thermal remediation equipment, supplies, furniture, and other miscellaneous items as needed in and out of housing facilities.


What You Should Know

  • The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm. Schedule may be subject to change.
  • This position operates University Vehicles and requires an active Driver's License.

  • The annual salary for this position is $55,000.

What We Require

  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
  • Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • Experience and knowledge of building Trades (mechanical, structural, electrical)
  • Strong customer service skills, including the ability to work well with others
  • Mechanical ability and technical expertise
