Within this setting, the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) provides students with an innovative student-centered curriculum that incorporates relevant technologies and interdisciplinary approaches to educate students with the requisite professional practices for leadership and collaboration in successful careers in art and design fields. BFSDoArt promotes life-long learning and academic excellence in an open and inclusive environment by developing transferable technical and research skills, specialized knowledge in discipline-specific areas, and communication of ideas by producing original creative works, scholarship, or pedagogy to cultivate discovery and innovation in the fields of art, design, or art education.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design prepares students to conceive and design visual communications and systems within a rapidly evolving technological context by providing skills to critically analyze design problems through comprehensive research and arrive at creative solutions using functional knowledge of professional design practices and processes. This degree and associated internships prepare students for professional careers in visual communication fields or graduate school.
To indicate achievement, Bachelor of Fine Arts students in Graphic Design create a body of creative work for exhibition and write a supporting creative brief. These indicate skills and knowledge competency in their communication of creative scholarship. This student-centered degree program mission reflects the University's mission and values: collaboration, academic excellence, discovery and innovation, openness and inclusion, integrity to promote academic distinction, and student and alumni success in the graphic design profession. The BFA in Graphic Design supports student success by encouraging the free exchange of ideas, creating experiential learning opportunities, and fostering agency in creative scholarship.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Chair of the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art, an Assistant Professor teaching in the Graphic Design program is required to teach undergraduate courses in Graphic Design, maintain an active creative practice/research agenda, and participate in departmental, college, and university service activities. Teaching takes place within a graphic design program that imbues students with a strong understanding of history, theory, and contemporary graphic design practice through a sequential curriculum of studio courses that blend academic research and practical, real-world application. In addition, assistant professors are expected to hold office hours on campus, attend all program and departmental meetings, serve on departmental committees, assist with student recruitment, participate in campus ceremonies, and contribute to student assessment. This position is a tenure-track, academic year, 10-month appointment. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications
Terminal degree (PhD/MFA/MGD/MDes) in Graphic Design or a closely related field, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Graphic Design, earned by August 1, 2025.
Demonstrated ability to teach at all levels of an undergraduate Graphic Design program.
Strong understanding of graphic design history, theory, and contemporary practice.
Demonstrated record of creative work and/or research in Graphic Design.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of full-time, university-level teaching experience.
Expertise in one of the following areas: UI/UX/IxD, data visualization, motion graphics, or exhibition design.
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
