Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking an Instructional Design Director! The Director of Instructional Design reports to the Senior Director, Executive, and Professional Education and has direct responsibility for managing course development projects through all stages of course production and instructor training. The director will also demonstrate the ability to problem solve, think critically, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Additionally, the director will have demonstrated industry experience in instructional design.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Project Management: Under the general direction of the Senior Director of Executive and Professional Education and consistent with the long-range goals and objectives of the Division of Continuing Education, this position is responsible for the design, development, delivery, and successful management of quality classroom, online, and hybrid courses. The Director will be responsible for the course development and facilitation processes and managing associated projects successfully. Additionally, the Director will be responsible for using evaluation metrics to review and implement process improvements that increase effectiveness. The Director will direct and organize program planning of all new and redeveloped programs; this process will involve regular communication and collaboration with stakeholders. Upon request, the Director will prepare reports on DCE course development and instructor facilitation. The Director will be assigned courses as an instructional designer as time permits.
  • Leadership: Supervises and provides leadership to instructional design staff. Creates an environment that encourages creativity and innovation and partners with the ID team to develop individual and team-wide professional development plans for existing and new staff. Performs annual performance evaluations, directs workflow, and strives to achieve departmental goals established by the Senior Director of Professional and Executive Education. Leads and participates in committees and task forces as required. Works with the Senior Director of Executive and Professional Education on budget allocation based on determined needs and projected priorities.
  • Creative Collaboration: Participates in leadership meetings between the Senior Director of Executive and Professional Education and the other department directors to address elevated concerns and guide the vision and innovative efforts of Executive and Professional Education. Contributes to an atmosphere of collaboration between all team members, celebrating successes, working together to find solutions, and learning from successful and unsuccessful efforts. Collaborates with program management personnel to find innovative solutions and meet deadlines. Collaborates with SMEs/instructors throughout the instructional design and course facilitation process to provide quality support and guidance.
  • Additional Duties: Offer purchasing recommendations to the Senior Director of Executive and Professional Education that improve projects or save time and/or organizational capital. Keep abreast of current trends and propose new ideas. Other projects, as assigned by the Senior Director of Executive and Professional Education.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Master's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of leadership experience.
  • Five years of experience in instructional design.
  • Experience working with third-party vendors and contractors in the course development process.

  • Excellent analytical, written, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and project management experience (with tools similar to Wrike).
