Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision of the Lieutenant, Public Safety, serves and provides protection and security to the district properties and personnel; provides fire response assistance; observes and reports potential injury or loss to the College, faculty, staff or students. Patrols campus buildings and grounds and provides needed emergency; ensures campus rules and laws are effectively enforced by directing compliance, issuing warnings, and reporting violations to appropriate authorities. Work requires the exercise of judgment and discretion in assuming control of emergency situations and appropriate action in accordance with established policies and procedures. Collaborates with government agencies and campuses and provides assistance. Assignments are completed independently and reviewed through discussion and formal reports.
- Patrolling to Maintain Public Safety: Monitors campus-wide safety, investigates disturbances, fire hazards, suspicious persons, hazardous conditions, trespassers, and other incidents occurring on campuses; assists in the investigation of incidents; and provides emergency aid. Operates and monitors computerized Fire and Security Systems and Closed Circuit Television Systems.
- District Crime Prevention: Patrols and maintains watch over buildings and grounds, checks doors and windows; conducts classroom refrigerator and freezer checks each shift for normal operating ranges; and reports accidents or defective conditions on foot and in, vehicle or fixed location. Provides the removal of locks and locker contents as part of locker searches.
- Parking Enforcement: Patrols parking areas to enforce parking regulations and writes citations and warnings as needed.
- Administrative Reporting: Writes accurate and complete incident reports; summarizes and documents results of initial investigations and campus incidents; submits written and verbal reports to supervisors for review and determination if further action is required.
- Effective Communication: Receives and disseminates information by radio, telephone and computer and coordinates communications between officers and other agencies. Dispatches personnel to emergency/non-emergency requests. Also, provides assistance with shift operations by providing information to co-workers on items affecting their activities and assisting co-workers with problems encountered and making decisions in the field and assuming responsibility for those decisions.
- Security Escorts: Assists staff, students and visitors in all activities related to security functions including walking escorts for students, employees and personnel carrying valuable property or currency.
- Training and Preparation: Conducts campus-wide emergency drills such as Fire, Lockdown, and Severe Weather Drills. Provides Safety Puppet Skits for Daycare student district-wide.
- Collaborative Teamwork: Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with students, staff, faculty, and outside agencies.
- Continuous Learning & Professional Development: Maintains current knowledge of best practices and standards in safety for higher education with an emphasis on community Colleges. Actively organizes and/or participates in applicable workgroups, trainings, workshops, seminars, committees and professional associations or conferences to promote continuous learning.
- Other duties: Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.
Qualifications
Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirement, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.
Required Education & Experience: Associate Degree in criminal justice or related field and three (3) years of law enforcement/public safety experience (preferably some in a metropolitan area).
Preferred Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Police Science or Criminal Justice or related field and more than five (5) years of law enforcement/public safety experience (preferably some in a metropolitan area).
Required License/Certification: CPR; First Aid; AED certification with 60 days of employment.
Preferred License/Certification: Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certification as a Wisconsin Peace Officer or similar law enforcement certification (must be attainable) highly desirable. Possesses or is eligible to possess a firearms permit from the State of Wisconsin's Department of Regulations and Licensing. Licensing is required within 90 days of employment.

- Knowledge of current crime prevention methods and procedures.
- Proficiency in the use of standard law enforcement equipment.
- Training and skill in community policing practices.
- Ability to interpret and apply techniques, procedures and methods used in the operation of communications equipment.
- Ability to interpret and apply codes, policies and procedures.
- Effective application of Incident Command System and National Incident Management System to emergencies.
- Skilled in mediation and crisis intervention.
- Ability to remain calm and professional under stressful situations.
- Ability to perform basic math computations.
- Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
- Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain effective work relationships with peers, students, teachers, staff, representatives of outside agencies, educational institutions, and the general public.
- Ability to convey an image of professionalism and dedication in work related activities.
- Ability to work with culturally diverse student and employee populations.
- Proficiency in the use of computers and software specific to position, including spreadsheets and the Internet.
- Knowledge of Google and Microsoft products.
- Ability to work successfully with minimal supervision.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs., carry, and push up to 20 lbs. and ability pull up to 50 lbs.
- Sitting/Standing/Walking: 20% of time spent sitting, 40% of time standing, and 40% of time walking.
- Ability to climb stairs and a ladder and maintain balance.
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, hear and speak.

Hourly Rate:
Hourly rate is listed to the midpoint of the salary range and is based on the 2024/2025 rates and are determined by years of experience credit and internal salary equity.
