Sculpture and Ceramics Lab Manager


What We're Looking For


The Sculpture and Ceramics Lab Manager will support the mission of the University by strengthening and maintaining the ceramics and sculpture/3D design areas in relation to teaching and facilities support through the employment of an individual with specialized training in these laboratories.


A bachelor's degree, 5 years of experience and an active Christian faith are required. A master's degree and experience in ceramics and sculpture/3D design is preferred.


A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.


The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, knowledge and abilities:



  • General welding, woodworking, casting, ceramic wheel throwing and or hand building techniques, kiln building, glaze mixing, and mechanical knowledge.

  • Technical ability/aptitude for maintaining tools and equipment.

  • Ability to use and teach the equipment for all labs.

  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt new and additional technology.

  • Experience with peripheral devices in all labs. Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

  • The ability to problem solve and work collaboratively.

  • Strong communications skills, problem solving skills, and work ethic.

  • Knowledge of and interest in keeping current in ceramics and sculpture/3D design trends in technology.


Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a Full-Time basis.


What You Will Do


For Both Labs — Sculpture and Photography



  • Daily oversight of the Ceramics and Sculpture laboratories, routine maintenance, and ensure a safe and accessible working environment

  • Make sure all work study lab assistants and student users have appropriate safety training

  • Provide assistance to faculty for their teaching and research efforts

  • Submit work orders and coordinate efforts with facilities management to repair or replace what is needed for specific operations and procedures

  • Provide performance self-evaluation covering areas of responsibility

  • Develop and conduct short training seminars as appropriate for students and/or faculty to learn lab-specific operations and procedures

  • Ability to handle a physically demanding workload. Should be able to lift at least 50lbs.

  • Interphase with safety officers and technicians

  • Ensure that labs are configured and stocked with the materials and supplies to meet the needs of each course and/or to meet the objectives of a particular lesson

  • Analyze current ceramics and sculpture/3D design trends, and anticipate future needs for all labs

  • Management of area budgets & submitting purchase request forms for materials. Order supplies and replacement parts necessary for the daily operation in all labs

  • Coordinate and manage the recycling and disposal of appropriate materials

  • Perform similar or related duties as special projects arise

  • Welding and fabrication of facility components, including tables, storage racks, etc.

  • Provide aid to students using the labs, and supervision of students in the following areas & activities:

    • woodworking

    • weld

    • casting

    • kiln firing and maintenance

    • clay mixing

    • wood splitting

    • glazing

    • wheel throwing and hand building




For Ceramics Lab



  • Maintain and repair the ceramics class room: Tools/equipment include, pottery wheels, slab roller, wedging tables, wet vacuum, and shop vacuum

  • Maintain and repair the glaze room: Tools/equipment include, ball mill, spray booth, triple beam balance scales, digital scales, air compressor

  • Maintain and repair the electric kiln room: Tools/equipment include, electric and manual kilns, electric kiln furniture, ware carts

  • Maintain and repair the kiln pad: Tools/equipment include, gas kilns, soda kiln, wood kiln, raku kiln, chain saws, wood splitter, clay mixers, pug mills, burner components, wet saw, bench grinder, hand grinders, wood chop saw, metal chop saw, floor scales, and kiln furniture

  • Keep accurate supply and equipment inventories. This includes appropriate levels of dry clay and glaze materials, studio clay, throwing bats, ware boards, pyrometric cones, kiln furniture, studio glazes, drills, drill bits, safety equipment, rub bricks, metal scrapers, diamond grinding bits, sand paper, wheel replacement parts, gas burner parts, thermocouples, relays, elements, bench grinding stones, kiln wash, oak/pine/cedar wood, and zerk grease

  • Occasionally responsible for assisting with kilns after 5pm, specifically turning up gas kilns for class firings and taking an evening shift the semester wood firing


For Sculpture/3D Design Lab



  • Maintain and repair the wood shop: Tools include a planer, jointer, two table saws, three bandsaws, panel saw, miter saw, four power sanders, wood lathe, drill press, and the central wood dust collection system

  • Maintain and repair the metal shop: Tools include three MIG welders, two plasma cutters, four oxy-acetylene welding stations, TIG welder, power sander, horizontal bandsaw, sandblaster, drill press, compressor, and four air-powered die grinding stations.

  • Maintain and repair the casting facility (foundry), Tools include the bronze and aluminum furnace, the iron casting furnace (cupalette), resin bonded sand mixer

  • Maintain, repair, and replace hand tools: Tools include twelve hand-held grinders, drill bits, wrenches, hole saws, screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, cutters, files, etc.

  • Keep accurate supply and equipment inventories. This includes appropriate levels of sanding discs, grinder discs, sandpaper, bandsaw blades, plasma cutter tips, nuts/bolts, screws, nails, paint and primer, casting resin, bronze, aluminum, iron, welding rod and wire, flux, and oxygen, argon, acetylene and propane tanks

  • Specifically, there is a work study student that supervises the woodshop during evenings each semester. This person needs to be trained by the Lab Manager

  • Occasionally responsible for assisting with casting metal after 5pm in the event of scheduling conflict


Professional



  • Attend professional meetings, seminars and training as approved for the purpose of gaining information and ideas necessary to enhance laboratory operations and job performance

  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission

  • Ability to comply with University policies

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
