Job Description:
The SUNY Charter Schools Institute is responsible for evaluating proposals for new charter schools, and the continuous monitoring of student academic performance, fiscal soundness, and overall school operations of 220+ SUNY Authorized charter schools. The School Evaluator is responsible for supporting the ongoing monitoring and evaluation of charter school performance.
Specific Duties Include (but are not limited to):
- Participate in school visits to conduct school quality reviews as part of the renewal and evaluation process for SUNY authorized charter schools including visits to schools throughout New York State.
- Work collaboratively with team members to design and communicate the Institute's seasonal visit schedules.
- Act as both a visit lead and team member on school renewal and evaluation visits. As a visit lead, the School Evaluator will create interview and classroom observation schedules, review documents, analyze data, disseminate information to Institute staff members and consultants, and facilitate team conversations.
- Each school visit results in a site visit report. The School Evaluator will manage the production of evaluation and renewal site visit reports, working directly with Institute staff members and consultants to synthesize data and create reports according to set deadlines; edit all such reports to ensure that the gathered evidence supports each conclusion.
Analyze and interpret school level data to support monitoring performance across the Institute's portfolio of 220+ charter schools. - Engage in the continuous improvement cycle of the Institute's charter school oversight and evaluation process by collecting and analyzing meta-data about the effectiveness of the Institute's qualitative school evaluation practices and methods.
- Support the professional development of team members by developing and delivering high quality learning activities in critical areas of education as they arise and as needed.
- Participate in other work of the Institute including, but not limited to, reviewing new charter school applications and grant funding applications.
Requirements:
Education / Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education, public policy/administration, research, or other relevant field with 3-5 years' experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
- Exceptional writing and data analysis skills a must.
- Strong organizational, communication, analytical, and project management skills required.
- Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail and with multiple priorities also required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications required.
- Ability to travel on a regular basis to participate in school evaluation visits a must.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working in an educational setting is strongly preferred. For example, preferred skills include working in at least one of the following areas:
- Teaching experience
- Leadership/administrative experience
- Experience working with students with disabilities and/or experience working with English language learners.
- Project management skills a plus.
- Experience with data management and analysis and higher-level quantitative and/or qualitative skills strongly preferred.
- Teaching experience
Additional Information:
Location: New York City or Albany, NY
Compensation for this position: The compensation for this role is between $80,000 and $90,000. The pay will depend on a variety of factors that may include but are not limited to location, experience, education, training, and certifications.
The State University of New York Board of Trustees established the SUNY Charter Schools Institute in February 1999 and charged it with evaluating proposals for new charter schools; ongoing monitoring of student academic performance, fiscal soundness, and overall school operations; and presenting charter renewal findings and recommendations to the SUNY Trustees.
