Job Description:


The College of Science at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or full Professor (tenure-track/tenured) in all areas of Cancer Research. Preference will be given to biomedical researchers working in disease models that represent disparities in our majority Hispanic population. Additional areas of preference include cancer pharmacoethnicity: pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic factors (Cancer metabolism); pharmacogenomic factors: genetic/epigenetic cancer susceptibility differences; pharmacoeconomic factors: role of healthcare access and quality drivers of early onset of cancers (Biomarkers); computational analysis and modeling; influence of obesity or obesity-associated metabolic changes/chronic metabolic diseases on the tumor microenvironment; drivers of chromosome instability among racial/ethnic populations; host response (such as microbe) or biological determinants; precision oncology; and new animal and cell culture models/systems development. The successful candidate is expected to establish an extramurally funded research program; to teach and mentor undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students and be a member of the Border Biomedical Research Center (BBRC). The College of Science boasts multiple state-of-the-art core facilities with full-time staff and BSL3/ABSL3 and small-animal (rodent) facilities. The core facilities include those focused on mass spectrometry, genomics, tissue culture and high-throughput drug screening, confocal microscopy, bioinformatics and biostatistics. Faculty in the college maintain strong collaborative and programmatic ties across multiple departments within and outside the college, including Psychology, Pharmacy, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science. Candidates' research should have the potential for strong extramural funding, and appointment will be considered in any department within the college that represents a strong fit with the candidate's expertise. Appointment is commensurate with the applicant's history of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and leadership. The start-up package is negotiable and contingent upon available funding, and the appointment is expected to begin Fall 2024.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The recruited faculty member will: (1) work to implement and deliver a curriculum using innovative teaching practices; (2) contribute to the department's and college's curriculum accreditation; (3) engage and mentor a culturally diverse undergraduate and graduate student body in research experiences; (4) communicate well across diverse faculty disciplines and student populations; (5) advance teaching and research skills through faculty development opportunities; (6) provide leadership through university, professional, scientific and/or community service; (7) demonstrate scholarly activity as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals; (8) develop and maintain a sustainable and extramurally-funded research program; (9) develop collaborations with established graduate programs at UTEP and neighboring institutions; and (10) mentor junior faculty members (for the Associate and full Professor ranks).


Requirements:


Candidates must have a doctoral degree in a biomedically-related field of sciences with an emphasis on Cancer Biology from an accredited institution, with documented evidence of:
  1. Success in collaborative scholarship, external funding, and/or publications;
  2. Evidence of successful teaching in a higher education institution;
  3. Ability to work effectively as a team with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  4. Involvement of students in research and/or publication opportunities;
  5. Service in their discipline/profession and at the university; and
  6. Mentoring of junior faculty (for the Associate and full Professor rank).

Minimum qualifications for appointment at the rank of Associate and full Professor include an extensive and continuing body of research published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Applicants eligible for the Associate Professor and full Professor ranks may be considered for leadership opportunities that are available or might become available within the School of Pharmacy.
