Public Safety Officer OR Pre-Act Academy Candidate (CSO)

Bucknell Public Safety is seeking to hire a dedicated individual to join our team as a Public Safety Officer or a Pre-Act Academy Candidate, Community Service Officer (CSO). Public Safety Officer:

Candidates who are already ACT 120 certified will be hired directly into a Sworn Public Safety Officer role.

Pre-Act Academy Candidate(CSO):

For candidates who are not yet ACT 120 certified, Bucknell Public Safety offers a pathway to becoming a Public Safety Officer:
  • Non-certified candidates will be hired initially into a Community Service Officer role (CSO).
  • Following a successful review, the university will sponsor the Community Service Officer to attend an ACT 120 police academy.
  • Upon successful completion of the academy and obtaining ACT 120 certification, the individual will transition into a Sworn Public Safety Officer role.


All Public Safety Officer candidates must be able to obtain and maintain ACT 120 status (Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officer Education and Training Commission certification).

Compensation:
  • Public Safety Officer, Salary Range: $24.25 to $28.38/hour
  • Pre-Act Academy Candidate (CSO), Salary Range: $18.00 to $19.05/hour
  • In addition to the competitive salary we will be providing additional shift differentials for both second and third shift in the amount of $1.25/hour.

  • Reports to the Deputy Director of Public Safety & Lieutenant

  • Schedule can vary across three different shifts.


What You Will Do as a Public Safety Officer and or Pre-Act Academy Candidate (CSO):
  • To know and enforce university policies and regulations, local, and state laws. Patrol University properties, surrounding areas and neighborhoods, as assigned, in effort to deter incidents. Patrol methods include: by foot, bike, or vehicle. Properly and safely carry and use, when necessary, various law enforcement devices. Respond to emergencies and incidents in a timely manner; determine the appropriate course of action and notify law enforcement officials or other members of the campus community as appropriate. Provides police and customer services, which include enforcing laws and regulations, de-escalation, problem solving, first aid and general assistance as required (40%).
  • Support the crime deterrence and safety mission on campus. Gather and compile information, write reports, and disperse to appropriate parties for criminal, fire, incident, or accident investigations, or for medical or hazardous conditions. Enforce campus traffic and parking regulations; issue tickets and/or citation or warnings as necessary (30%).
  • Provide students and employees safe escort services within the main campus geography as requested. Respond to requests in a timely and courteous manner. Respond to a variety of alarms such as fire, burglary, and other supervisory alarms. Assist in conducting alarm testing and evacuation drills. Respond to other types of alarms. Maintain traffic details and crowd control for special events. Proactively engage the campus during non-crisis moments to build authentic relationships (15%).
  • Familiar with all record keeping systems and processes for data entry. To assist members and guests of the University in whatever manner possible in Public Safety related problems and issues. - Attend training classes and departmental meetings as required (15%).

Required:
  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain ACT 120 standards in accordance with PA law.
  • Out of State Candidates must be able to obtain PA ACT 120 Certification. We may sponsor candidates to an ACT 120 Training Academy. An employee contract between the candidate and Bucknell is a requirement of sponsorship. Out of state applicants must be able to pass the MPOETC waiver exam and be eligible to take the test based on attending the Police Academy.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Pennsylvania vehicle license within 45 days of hire date.
  • Demonstrate Good Written and Oral Communication Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact sensitively and effectively with members of the academic community.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Must be able to pass a background check for JNET clearance.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Pennsylvania vehicle license within 45 days of hire date.


Preferred, but not required:
  • Bachelor's Degree


Pre-Act Academy Candidate(CSO):
Required:
  • Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrate Good Written and Oral Communication Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact sensitively and effectively with members of the academic community.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Must be able to pass a background check for JNET clearance.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Pennsylvania vehicle license within 45 days of hire date.


Preferred, but not required:
  • Prior experience working in campus law enforcement.


Other Information about the position:
  • Must be able to pass a background check, physical, psychological, and if required for entry into the Police Academy a physical fitness test.
  • Any non Act 120 certified candidate would be hired as a pre-service academy candidate and would start at the salary range mentioned above. Upon completion of a MPOETC Academy a candidate would then move into a higher sworn Public Safety Officer hourly rate.
  • All Public Safety Officers are also Campus Security Authorities as defined by the Clery Act.
  • A candidate who needs to attend an Academy will need to sign a 3 year employment contract.


Physical Requirements:
  • The position will be required to lift, move, push, pull, or carry materials weighing from 20 to 50 lbs.
  • Regular walking, biking, and driving is required.
  • Must be able to run, bend, lift, and climb as required.
  • Must be able to quickly respond to critical incidents. Must be able to wear body armor.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
