Pay Range: $39.00 to $45.27/hourly. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.

Summary

This is a part-time, on call position that will provide both quality sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign interpreting in all areas for Deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, faculty and visitors at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.



Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Accept assignments according to skill level, and availability as offered by the Director of Disability Services or requested by ASL Interpreter in Human Resources.
  • Independently prepare for assignments (obtain and review materials, books, etc.)
  • Independently provide and maintain the high-quality interpreting services established at the university.
  • Establish a working relationship with the client throughout the assignment.
  • Communicate with supervisor regarding any assignment issues, absences, client absences, policy issues, and other related issues.
  • Be prepared to take on other paid assignments from supervisor as needed, in the case of cancellations or schedule changes.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Adhere to departmental standards established in Disability Services as well as policies and procedures of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
  • Work cooperatively in team interpreting assignments according to established procedures.
  • Complete any and all necessary trainings or tasks required for UCCS staff employees.
  • Maintains certification by completing continuing education units required by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
  • Adheres to the RID Code of Professional Conduct

Qualifications

  • RID certified: NIC. Older certifications recognized by RID are also accepted (NIC Advanced/Master, CI/CT, NAD III/IV/V). Interpreters with state-issued certifications and verified post-secondary interpreting experience may be considered, in which case RID certification is required within two years of hire at the interpreter's expense.

  • Substitution: Associate degree or completion of an interpreter preparation program with two years' experience providing interpreting services at the post-secondary level may substitute for the required certification at hire date. RID certification or equivalent certification is required within two years of hire date at the interpreter's expense.

  • Substitution: Board of Evaluation of Interpreters-BEI Certification, evidence of passing the Advanced or Master Performance examination and certified by BEI.

  • Able to match individual receptive and expressive language needs of each client, including ASL, CASE, PSE, and other sign systems.
