Job Summary
Health Professions Outreach (HPO) is a unit for Augusta University (AU) students who wish to pursue a health professions degree program and successfully enter a health profession. The Director will create programming and experiences designed to create personalized pathways for students to connect with campus and community resources in their journey towards their chosen health profession. The Director will ensure that the unit maintains its focus to advise and counsel to two distinct populations of students:
1. Current AU undergraduate students interested in pursuing programs of study in health sciences.
2. Undergraduate students interested in graduate health profession programs.
The Director will ensure HPO serves as a resource for students who can expertly represent the various pre-requisites and requirements of destination programs and also become a reliable partner for the colleagues' that offer these programs of study. The Director will provide leadership in developing programming focused on supporting student success in the admissions applications processes, development of composite letters, personal statements, test preparation, and development of interview skills. The Director is not expected to build each of these services within the Center, but partner with other services to leverage resources that would be beneficial to the students. Therefore, the Director must have a record of success in building strategic coalitions and serving as a connector across organizational boundaries.
The Director of HPO is also responsible for providing leadership for the development, organization, delivery, and evaluation of comprehensive academic advising and career services. The Director provides leadership for integrative advising and career based initiatives to facilitate student enrollment, promote access, retention, and graduation.
Responsibilities include day-to-day leadership of assigned staff and management of focus area unit operations, integrating guiding pathways strategies, academic advising and career guidance, connecting students with other academic support, student affairs representatives, and other key areas.
The Director will also serve as Career Academic Professional Engagement (CAPE) Cluster Director over 1 of 3 clusters. This will include: program design and implementation, relationship management, operations, and professional development.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
PROGRAM DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION: Provides vision, leadership, mission, philosophy and oversight for HPO and its programs, staff training, student tracking and monitoring, and assessment of activities. Lead development of innovative strategies utilizing new technologies to provide the highest level of student contact and service to contribute to student success goals. Articulates how pre-health advising contributes to achieving the vision, mission, and philosophy of the institution. Provides leadership for the Health Professions Outreach with a mission to develop and deliver timely, supportive health professions advising and outreach services to students. Develops and maintains a pre-health advising agenda that articulates the department's mission, curriculum, student learning outcomes, and advisor and student responsibilities. Develops a system and process for training new pre-health coordinators, and develops and maintains appropriate training materials. Select, train, and supervise Health Professions Peer Mentors. Teach at least one INQR 1000 Health Professions focused section per year. Development of annual goals for HPO in collaboration with AVP and staff Coordinate semester planning for programs/services, documentation and reporting for benchmarks. Must demonstrate ability to promote a welcoming environment that reflects the varying backgrounds represented by our students and employees and which every individual feels respected and valued. Professionally represent and promote the department through involvement in campus wide programming, presentations, committees, events, and departmental marketing initiatives. Work collaboratively across faculty, academic and student support units on shared goals/objectives. Update and maintain detailed records and reporting of department's progress using office tools, departmental systems, and university databases.
OPERATIONS: Manage the daily operations for HPO to provide staffing, supervision, evaluation, and training of all professional full-time and student staff. Manage the departmental budget, allocated personnel, and fiscal resources. Manages the program office efficiently, maintains accurate and confidential student records, and develops advising initiatives, programs, and services as needed. Develops and implements policies and procedures for Health Professions Advising. Assess the effectiveness of HPO including tracking student satisfaction/outcomes, acceptance rates, professional school placements, available employment information, etc. Prepare annual and other regular assessment reports. Tracks the pre-health population and maintains statistics about the population and program. Tracks the focus area student population and maintains statistics about the population and programs. Facilitates collaborative grant writing to identify additional funding sources and opportunities.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: Manage the program's internal and external relationships by serving as the program's spokesperson, operating in partnership with other student and advising services on campus, and ensuring the program serves the needs of the pre-health population, the institution, and the community. Chairs the Health Professions Advisory Committee developing collaborative relationships with faculty in the academic colleges. Collaboration with the Academic Advising Center, Career Services, Undergraduate Admissions, the Area Health Education Center Program and Regional Offices, advisors, and mentors.
CAPE DUTIES: The Director of HPO is also responsible for providing leadership for the development, organization, delivery, and evaluation of comprehensive academic advising and career services. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Develops a personal professional development plan with short and long-term career goals. Engages regularly in professional development and scholarship, both as a member of the institution's academic community and as a member of the local, regional, and national pre-health advising communities. Mentors and supports the development of staff resources within the unit.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university and five years relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education, counseling, or a health-related field.
Experience in a university setting with relevant pre-health advising, professional school, or career services is preferred. It is critical to the success of this position that key stakeholders view the Director as a knowledgeable partner and supportive colleague in developing and implementing processes and strategies to ensure student success. This experience should include the demonstrated ability to lead and work successfully in a relational structure with all academic leaders, faculty, staff, and students in promoting collaboration within a complex higher education institutional setting.
