Charter Oak State College is developing a pool of applicants for potential part-time teaching positions for the credit course offerings in the Early Childhood Education Department. These positions are on continuous recruitment, and are filled on an as-needed basis, depending on course offerings, enrollment and specific department needs. You will only be contacted if there is a current need at the college you indicated on your application and have met the qualifications/skills and experience that are required for the position. Your applications will stay active for 1 year.
Adjunct faculty will:
- Teach courses in the Early Childhood Education program as well as other related majors.
- Utilize the Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators as a basis for instruction and assessment to ensure learning outcomes are met.
- Support the department by ensuring that all students complete required field experiences and key assessments to ensure NAEYC Higher Education Accreditation requirements are met.
- Connect at-risk students with appropriate supportive services, such as Student Accessibility Services, Tutoring Services, or Counseling, to address barriers to academic achievement,
- Maintain presence in online course at least four days each week. Monitor and participate in discussions, when appropriate, and review and provide quality feedback to student work based on the college timeline for review of student work.
- Attend faculty meetings either in-person or virtually, based on availability, with the exception of the annual faculty meeting, held at the start of the new school year.
- Participate in at least one professional development activity per year.
- The Adjunct Instructor should have knowledge and understanding of research-based practices for teaching children in early childhood education, including understanding of principles for teaching adult learners. Faculty hired to teach without understanding of the adult learner will be provided with training.
- The Adjunct Instructor must have excellent communication and documentation skills. Courses will be assigned based in experience. It is expected that the Adjunct Instructor have cultural awareness, and ability to work with culturally diverse faculty and students. Must be comfortable using email and learning platforms, such as Blackboard, as well as experience computers. Must have reliable technology and access to high-speed internet.

Example of Job Duties:
Under the Director of the ECE Program Director, the ECE adjunct faculty members are responsible for teaching the content of the classes and facilitating learning to a diverse population in an online, asynchronous environment through effective performance in these essential duties:
- Complete the Charter Oak Faculty Orientation within 30 days of being approved to teach.
- Prior to the course start, complete a quality check of the assigned course.
- Engage fully with students in assigned course/s. This translates to having active course participation and responding to all student questions within 48 hours.
- Facilitate course/s as designed through the learning management system (Blackboard).
- Proactively reach out to students that miss assignments.
- Refer or notify appropriate academic and/or support services such as tutoring or advising as appropriate.
- Immediately notify Program Director on all students matters.
- Post weekly course updates, announcements, and course overview video.
- Maintain and submit accurate and timely reports for student grades.
- Adhere to all Charter Oak State College faculty expectations regarding engagement in the course.
- Provide personalized and substantive feedback to students based on the college policy for grading student work.
- Respond promptly to student, Program Director, and college emails.
- Maintain current knowledge of professional issues.
- Complies with all federal, state, and college guidelines.
- Attends department meetings.
- Reports any challenges to course content or the Blackboard LMS to the appropriate program director.
- Refer students to support services as needed.
- Submits final grades within five days at the end of the term.
- Collects, reports, and submits data within five days at the end of the term.
- Identifies and meets with at-risk-students as needed.
- Documents in writing all student and program concerns to the Program Director
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Demonstrated competency in computer applications.
- Minimum three (3) years of industry and practical experience in a professional discipline.
- Demonstrated training or experience in teaching in an online asynchronous environment.
- Effective communication skills.
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or other doctorate from a regionally accredited institution.
- Extensive knowledge working in a learning management system.
- At least two (2) years of higher education teaching experience or one (1) year of higher education online teaching experience.
- Bilingual.
- Experience working in NAEYC Accredited Early Learning Programs.
Starting Salary:
Faculty are paid on a per student basis for teaching.
