General Description
Under the direction of the Director, Access and Ability Center (AAC), the Alternate Media and Technology Specialist will be responsible for providing district-wide technical assistance and instruction to faculty and staff in the production and use of alternate media for students with disabilities. This position will also provide technical assistance in the implementation of the course management system and electronic materials used by faculty to ensure accessibility to persons with disabilities. Additionally, this position will help address students' limitations and barriers utilizing various best practices, strategies and technological solutions to support student success by assisting students with their use of various specialized equipment, materials and assistive/adaptive technologies.
This is a full-time, 12-month position.
The work schedule is Monday to Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
Initial salary placement is $66,872

Job Duties
Job duties include:
- Serve as liaison between faculty, students and the AAC to secure and translate instructional materials into alternate formats in a timely manner.
- Utilize textbook repository sites such as ATN, Bookshare, ATPC, AIMHub, etc. to obtain textbooks and instructional materials for students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with book publishers to request electronic files on behalf of students with disabilities.
- Convert inaccessible textbooks and instructional materials into formats used with screen readers, such as Read Write Gold and JAWS.
- Upload, organize, and refer to converted materials in the current internal AAC digital library.
- Maintain detailed records of students' requests each semester, including dates of requested materials to ensure compliance of legal delivery timelines, and provide data to internal data specialist when requested.
- Offer individual and group trainings on specialized equipment, materials and assistive/adaptive technology to students with disabilities such as Kurzweil, Learning Ally, Dragon Naturally Speaking (and/or Dragon Professional Anywhere), JAWS, ZoomText, Smart Pens, and make recommendations for the most appropriate technology solutions and strategies for student success.
- Offer individual and group trainings on built-in accessibility features in Microsoft Edge, Google, Windows, Apple, Adobe, etc.
- Provide direct consultation to staff and faculty regarding adaptive and assistive technological solutions for students.
- Assist students and/or staff on accessibility tools within Canvas to support online learning.
- Master and support new software and hardware products and train staff as needed.
- Troubleshoot equipment/software failures including running diagnostic software where appropriate, visually inspecting various computer parts, and determining the most efficient course of action to place the failed unit back online.
- Master and support AIM (Accessible Information Management) software used by the AAC by remaining abreast on updates, collaborating with AIM rep, arranging department trainings and assisting AAC staff with technology challenges as needed.
- Maintain contact with various assistive technology vendors and make recommendations to AAC Director.
- Arrange equipment loan pickup/drop-offs with individual students and maintain detailed inventory records.
- Collaborate with COS IT department to ensure accessibility across the district's student-computers, etc.
- Continuously ensure COS website is compliant in accessibility and offer recommendations to COS Webmaster.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to:
- Two years college-level course work in computer science or information systems and two years of experience with technology related to persons with disabilities.
- A bachelor's degree in a technology or Assistive Technology field is preferred.
Valid California driver's license and an incumbent must be insurable at the "standard rate" by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Adaptive and assistive technologies such as Kurzweil, Learning Ally, Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS, ZoomText, Smart Pens as well as built-in accessibility features in Microsoft Edge, Google, Windows, Apple, Adobe, etc.
- Windows and Macintosh operating systems, MS 365 (and later), Adobe, various web browsers, and data management systems (e.g. AIM), Canvas, and a wide variety of computer applications.
- Laws, regulations and requirements related to DSP&S, Title 5, ADA, Section 504, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and Section 508 implementations and compliance.
- Textbook repository sites such as ATN, Bookshare, ATPC, AIMHub, etc.
- Produce alternate media;
- Communicate clearly in both oral and written form;
- Collaborate with AAC Director to develop and implement policies, procedures and programs related to enhanced use of computer technology in the delivery of services to students.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic,
- ethnic, cultural and disability backgrounds of community college students and staff
- Ability to prioritize in a dynamic environment with multiple competing demands
- Stay current with trends and technological advancements in assigned areas of

- effective working relationships with students, staff and community organizations.
- Interpret, apply and explain district policies and other laws, regulations and requirements related to assignment
- Work cooperatively with other educational institutions and agencies (i.e., universities, Chancellor's Office, other community colleges, county office of
- education and K-12 schools.)

Frequently exposed to the risks of computer-generated video radiation and other hazards associated with working computers.
