Job Summary:

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine has a faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full-time faculty or designee, this position provides inpatient and outpatient medical care services at for the pediatric cardiothoracic service at Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital. The candidate will be expected to provide independent clinical services for patients seen on the Congenital cardiothoracic surgery service. The APP will be intimately involved in the preoperative assessment, the inpatient hospital stays, and the post operative follow up outpatient care. The APP will also support the Precision Medicine Institute at CHCO with obtaining informed consent, facilitating collection and aiding with supportive regulatory requirements for collection of discarded Thymus tissue in the per-operative period, as part of an institutional initiative in collaboration with industry sponsors. These efforts are integral to the organization's goal of becoming a Qualified Sourcing and Treatment Center for the treatment of congenital athymia.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Pre-operative assessment of both inpatient and outpatient cardiac surgical patients
  • Preoperative counseling and obtaining informed consent for surgical procedures performed at CHCO
  • Performing inpatient consultation for patients planned for cardiac surgical procedures.
  • Supporting patient safety and quality control initiatives within CHCO
  • Participating in post operative care of cardiac surgical patients including minor procedures and incisional care.
  • Facilitating post-operative care coordination with the inpatient cardiology team
  • Supporting the surgeons with post operative care of cardiac surgical patients through the global period.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

PA/NP Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current license to practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse or as a Physician Assistant
  • Meets and maintains specific requirements of the Nursing Credential Review Board (Nurse Practitioner) or the Medical Review Board (Physician Assistant)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain prescriptive authority (DEA License)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the care of children and adults with congenital heart defects is strongly advised.
  • Candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse professional and patient population.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the professional medical and surgical practice to give and evaluate patient care in the area of Congenital cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of medicine and surgery to provide on-going patient care.
  • Skill in taking medical history, assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
  • Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients and their family members, medical staff, residents, fellows, medical students, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$112,450 to $160,000 based on experience

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
